Updated: April 16, 2026 | Reading time: 5 min.

What Are Liver Function Tests?

Liver function tests (LFTs) are a group of blood tests that assess the health of your liver. Key markers include ALT, AST, bilirubin, GGT, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP).

Normal Ranges

MarkerNormal (Male)Normal (Female)Elevated Indicates
ALT<41 U/L<33 U/LLiver cell damage
AST<40 U/L<32 U/LLiver or heart damage
Bilirubin3.4–17.1 µmol/LJaundice, bile duct issues
GGT<60 U/L<40 U/LAlcohol impact, bile issues

When to Worry?

Mildly elevated levels (up to 2x normal) can be temporary — after alcohol, medications, or intense exercise. If ALT/AST exceeds 3x the normal range or bilirubin is elevated, consult a doctor promptly.
